When I first came to CrossFit Seattle a number of years ago, I was looking for something new, something challenging.
Like a lot of people, I was bored with the typical gym routine. Still, I figured I was in decent shape. I’d long been an athlete, including pitching in college for the University of Richmond, a Division I school, and I’d kept active ever since.
Dave put me through my first workout here, and by the end, I thought the world was going to fall around me. I was counting the stars in front of my face. I had to get used to being humbled on a daily basis.
But I quickly learned that there’s a lot more going on here than hard workouts. What keeps me coming back—and what led me to become a trainer—is not just health benefits. It’s the camaraderie and sense of community.
I’m a middle school physical education teacher, and also coached wrestling, basketball and track, so I decided to try CrossFit-style workouts with my kids. At first, they were a bit intimidated. Now, they love it. I make it a game for them—maybe push-up tag, followed by skill-building, and then a short workout incorporating that skill. The kids have fun, they work hard, and they encourage each other. It’s amazing to see.
Teaching adults, I have the same philosophy: it’s got to be fun. My goal is to challenge you, and have you come away from class with a sense of satisfaction. To see somebody do something they couldn’t do before, that’s awesome. It’s an intrinsic motivational hook. They come back and say, “What can I do next?”
